Global Temperature by the Numbers

nasa:

The Year

4th Hottest

2018 was the fourth hottest year since modern recordkeeping began. NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration work together to track temperatures around the world and study how they change from year to year. For decades, the overall global temperature has been increasing.

image

Over the long term, world temperatures are warming, but each individual year is affected by things like El Niño ocean patterns and specific weather events.

1.5 degrees

Globally, Earth’s temperature was more than 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the average from 1951 to 1980.

image

The Record

139 years

Since 1880, we can put together a consistent record of temperatures around the planet and see that it was much colder in the late-19th century. Before 1880, uncertainties in tracking global temperatures were too large. Temperatures have increased even faster since the 1970s, the result of increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

image

Five Hottest

The last five years have been the hottest in the modern record.

image

6,300 Individual Observations

Scientists from NASA use data from 6,300 weather stations and Antarctic research stations, together with ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures to track global temperatures.

image

The Consequences

605,830 swimming pools

As the planet warms, polar ice is melting at an accelerated rate. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets lost about 605,830 Olympic swimming pools (400 billion gallons) of water between 1993 and 2016.

image

8 inches

Melting ice raises sea levels around the world. While ice melts into the ocean, heat also causes the water to expand. Since 1880, sea levels around the world have risen approximately 8 inches.

image

71,189 acres burned

One symptom of the warmer climate is that fire seasons burn hotter and longer. In 2018, wildfires burned more than 71,189 acres in the U.S. alone.

image

46% increase in CO2 levels

CO2 levels have increased 46 percent since the late 19th Century, which is a dominant factor causing global warming.

Insider sources say Apple shutting east Texas stores to escape the jurisdiction of America's worst patent court

mostlysignssomeportents:

The Eastern District of Texas is home to a crooked court that is in the pocket of patent trolls, handing down ludicrous rulings in favor of the trolls, whose “head offices” are tiny, unoccupied offices in empty, dusty office buildings, the rent on which entitles patent trolls to claim that their rights are being infringed in the demense of the Eastern District’s terrible judges.

A report in Macrumors cites “five sources familiar with the matter” and claims that Apple is now planning to shutter all the Apple Stores within the Eastern District, replacing them with a giant store in the Galleria Dallas, just over the line from the Eastern District, reported to be opening on April 13. The closures were officially confirmed by Apple in a statement to Techcrunch.

Such a move would help Apple avoid the Eastern District’s jurisdiction, escaping the residency requirement that cases be heard “where the defendant has committed acts of infringement and has a regular and established place of business.”

"Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity — in all this..."

“Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity — in all this vastness — there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It’s been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”

About RSS Enterprise

Before (a)social media, the web used to be social. Each and every Web 2.0 site used to offer its info pebbles also as an RSS feed. RSS (really simple syndication) is a standardized XML format (extensible markup language) that an RSS reader app can import and display. Some of this information infrastructure has survived and can be revived by the web app RSS Enterprise on this page.

The primary use case is Mastodon. But as it turns out, RSS feeds provided by at least BlueSky, tumblr, WordPress, SpeakerDeck, Pinterest, and Wordpress can also be displayed here.

For Mastodon in specific, there are a few special features:

Of course, you can always fiddle around with the parameters in the browser’s address bar:

RSS Enterprise parameter info
rss=
The feed url or a dropable blog URL
Support for multiple Mastodon hash tags; e.g. get the combined tags #ComputerHistory #HistoryOfComputers #HistoryOfComputing #chm with this RSS Enterprise link
rss2=
A second feed to be displayed; but no support for multiple tags
roundrobin
Optional parameter to flip-flop between two feeds instead of sorting them chronologically

stay curious – share the links – have fun! Matthias

Try any RSS feed:
